The run to Panama

It was fun to finally load up the Safari and get back on the road. Our pace has been really cool in that when we find a cool spot we take a good long vacation there, then hop back in the car for another road trip. This time the goal was Panama City, but we had enough time to check out southern Costa Rica along the way.

At first our goal for the day was to go to get to the middle of the country to hike a volcano, but it just wasn’t in the cards: the ferry to the mainland from the peninsula was full, setting us back two hours, not to mention we’d have a ton of driving to do once we got done with the climb. It was all working against us so once we got off the ferry we stuck to the coast, heading south to Jaco (where I traded in my surfboard), then stopping for the night in Playa Hermosa, just to the south.

In Hermosa, the waves were a bit too quick for us so we hiked up the hills to an abandoned canopy tour operation…

And got a chance to see macaws and toucans in the wild, finishing off the hike with long views of the coastline up to Jaco and south…

Once back we hopped back in the car and headed south. Our goal was Dominical, which we’d heard would take 3 hours or so. That was before they finished the road I guess (thanks Lonely Planet 2010…), because it took us under an hour.

Dominical is sweet. It’s the closest thing we’ve seen to El Tunco in El Salvador, and we had a great time there. A big night out with a good crew watching an electric fiddler play Pink Floyd covers. It was a quick visit, but we got up late in the morning for a quick surf, then back in the Safari to hit the border.
