Leaving Hood River

Time for phase two!

August is done and overwith which means we’ve moved out of our apartment in Hood River and we’re heading south. Our last day in the Hood was supposed to be the 31st, but with light winds on Monday we packed up and left a day early. Speaking of packing, Tom and Phil must have set some kind of record for cubic feet of stuff packed into a Toyota Sienna… 8 windsurfing boards, 15 masts, 20 sails, 6 booms, two bikes and a whole bunch of other stuff. Our load looks pretty light in comparison!


Off we went. First stop, just 60 miles to the west, was Portland. Luckily we’ve got bikes because this is supposed to be the bike capitol of United States. The city feels sort of like a game of snakes and ladders – bikes and street cars get special routes to cut down time and distance through the city, while cars wait at traffic lights. After ripping around for an hour or two we stopped for dinner at the Rogue pub. Portland also loves microbreweries.


Filled up and satisfied, we rolled back down to the Safari and loaded up to finally begin heading south. Around 11pm, we pulled off the highway between Salem and Bend to stop for the night. We’ve gotten pretty good at finding the most random spots to camp…

Up in the morning and continuing south east to Bend through the Cascade mountains then south to Newberry National Volcanic Monument. This was a great find: first, a mile-long trek into a lava flow cave, next, a 12 mile bike ride up and around the rim of the crater. The end of the cave offered us a chance to find out if humans have any sonar abilities (answer: still working on it), and we walked the whole way out of the cave without our lights on (other people’s lights helped a bit).

The climb up to the rim on our bikes was probably the steepest we’ve encountered so far – not so much a bike route as it was a goat path. The incline was made a bit tougher as the route started at around 6000 feet and wound up at 8000 feet. Three miles later we got to the peak, which conviently has a parking lot at the top so that you can tour the way you’re supposed to in America – in you car. The ride down was great fun, ripping by a massive obsidian flow and down to the lakes.


A decent day, topped off with some fried food at Chalet Restaurant in Chemult, Oregon.

    Sounds amazing! Look for opportunities for hiking between great inns in your area. We are planning a trip to the area this fall, as a second choice. Don’t think I want to sleep in the car!
